Vancouver Fishing Report, June 19th

We have been on the water a lot over the past 10 days. The big NW winds kept us from crossing the strait but we were able to find some fish in Howe Sound and in the harbour when the conditions allowed. The Gulf Islands is generally your best bet this time of year however it isn't living up to its potential for June.

Howe Sound has been a mixed bag with some good days and some slower days. Sturgeon fishing has been good and expect it to improve over the next couple of weeks as we are nearing the end of the freshet. Since the winds have let up, on our full days we have been spending most of our time fishing thrasher rock and off of Gabriola Island. The winds seemed to have moved some fish around and brought in a few new ones. First and last light seem to offer the best bite of the day with most of our fish caught within those times. During mid-day we are really working for our bites and covering an area good before moving on. We are averaging 2-6 chinook bites and hoping this picks up over the latter part of June to more typical numbers.

Howe Sound has had some good days with some big fish being caught lately. We have been catching a few jacks which is a great sign as the mature fish tend to follow shortly after. The bell buoy has produced a few nice chinooks and the Capilano Coho are starting to show up in small numbers. This fishery should really start to pick up over the next 2-3 weeks and really kick off our great local fishery for the summer.

We have been running a mixture of bait, hootchies and spoons. We have been using the Silver Horde Irish Cream and Kitchen Sink, the G Force Bon Chovy and Trailhead spoons. As for the Gibbs Delta Guide Series Flashers, you cant go wrong with the Bon Chovy, STS, Madi and Lemon Limes. Come by our Gibbs Delta Pro Shop on Granville Island for all of your local fishing gear and up to date fishing reports.

Sturgeon Fishing continues to be quite good for this time of year on the lower Fraser River. We are in the final couple of weeks of the freshet and we are expecting the fishing to pick up any day now. July and August can offer some good fishing and great weather. Our sturgeon boat is only 25 minutes from downtown Vancouver.
