November Fishing Report - Vancouver Winter Chinook have arrived!
Similar to the last couple years, our Vancouver Winter Chinook Fishery seems to be starting earlier each year and continuing to improve. We have seen encouraging numbers of "winter" or "feeder" chinook over the last month. There has been some nice fish in to the mid teens around which is very nice to see. From what we have seen and heard so far It is setting up to be another very good winter of salmon fishing in Howe Sound, Vancouver Harbour and the Gulf Island's. The boats are ready, the heaters are tuned up and we are looking forward to our favourite fishery of the year!
We have spent the majority of our time in Howe Sound and Vancouver Harbour in recent weeks and have got some nice legal winter chinook from both areas. We have not been over to the Gulf Island's recently, but have got some encouraging reports with some very nice sized fish in the mix.
As usual this time of year, it is important to keep your gear fairly close to bottom and keep your eye on your sounder for bait and signs of individual salmon. We find that smaller 3.0 spoons work particularly well in November and December. Our favourites are the Silver Horde Irish Cream, Herring Aide and Homeland Security as well as the Gibbs Delta Trailhead and Bon Chovy . These handful of spoons will get fish anywhere in Howe Sound and Vancouver Harbour this time of year.
We have started to drop prawn traps on our 8 hour trips and have good success. Crabbing is still slow as the commercial season is still open, it will pick up for us in December.
Winter time is truly a spectacular time to head on the water in Vancouver. The snow capped mountains, protected waters, chrome salmon, and the wildlife make for some memorable days. As guides, we really look forward to this time of year!
